Logo for the 2024 Winter Learning Challenge

Challenge yourself to read or learn every day between January 1 - February 29 for your chance to win prizes. For every 5 days of reading or learning logged, earn a virtual raffle ticket to enter into one of our grand prize drawings. You can also earn a virtual raffle ticket for every activity your complete. This year we are also setting a community goal of 250 participants. If our goal is reached, several of the library staff will dye their hair in the color of your choosing!  

Open to Lemont students and Lemont cardholders of all ages. Sign up and log through Beanstack, with the Beanstack tracker app, or in person at the library.

Reading for the challenge

For the challenge, count the days that:

  • You read to yourself.
  • You are read to by another person.
  • You read to someone else.
  • You listen to or read books, audiobooks, ebooks, magazines, newspapers, blogs, and online articles.
Learning Opportunities

There are so many different forms of learning, and the following are just a few examples of things you could count as a day of learning for the challenge:

  • Listening to a podcast.
  • Watching a documentary.
  • Performing a science experiment.
  • Going on a nature walk to observe plants and animals.
  • Trying a new sport or hobby.
Challenge Activity List

You will earn a raffle ticket for each activity you complete:

  • Write a love note to a book at the library between Feb 4 and Feb 13. 

  • Check out a Library of Things item

  • Participate in a library program or special event

  • Read to a pet, stuffed animal, or your favorite person. 

  • Visit a museum, zoo, or garden with a Museum Adventure Pass or an Explore More Illinois discount

  • Donate an item to the Little Free Pantry. 

  • Visit a store downtown to show your support. 

  • Host a movie or game night with family or friends. 

  • Listen to music, go to karaoke, or have a sing-along. 

  • Check out an item on Hoopla or Libby

  • Build a snowman out of snow, Legos, food, get creative! 

  • Read in your pajamas. 

  • Try a new recipe from a cookbook bought at the Friends cookbook sale February 4

  • Write a letter to someone. 

  • Try a course, practice a new language, or learn something new with the library’s e-resources

  • Build a reading fort or a cozy book nook. 

  • Ask a librarian to recommend their favorite book and then check it out! What was it? 

  • Go for a winter walk at the Sagawau Valley Education Center

Each activity may be completed only once.

 

Logging for the Challenge

There are 3 different ways to log:

  • Beanstack online: Click Log Reading and Activities, select your reader from the drop-down menu, then choose Log Days (for reading or learning) or Complete An Activity (for the special challenge activities).
  • Beanstack tracker app: Tap +, then Reading or Activity, then choose your reader.

Prizes

Earn small prizes at 5, 10, 15, & 20 days of reading or learning logged:

  • 5 days = a bookmark
  • 10 days = hot chocolate packet
  • 15 days = winter stress ball
  • 20 days = candy bar

 

Raffle Tickets

Enter your virtual tickets by February 29 through our Beanstack website, the Beanstack tracker app, or in person at the Youth or Adult Services desks:

  • Every 5 days logged (up to 60 total) in January & February earns a raffle ticket.
  • Each of the 18 special challenge activities you complete also earns another raffle ticket.
  • We have 19 grand prize drawings for you to enter!
  • Winners will be drawn on Friday, March 1.
